Nicotine Awareness

Usual course length: 1/2 - 1 day

In recent years there has been increasing change in the way that people use nicotine with the development of new devices and products – often referred to as 'e-cigarettes'. This new disruptive technology has brought the whole issue of nicotine into the headlines as governments and the EU seek to regulate its use. There has been a lot of information in the media and significant divergence of opinion within and between producers, consumers, scientists and the public health community about how we should respond and this has lead to much uncertainty and confusion amongst those working in situations where use and control of use are live issues. The aim of this course is to provide participants with accurate information, to enable them to make informed choices in their individual and organisational approaches.

Courses can be tailor-made from the following elements:

  • What is nicotine, its function and effects – good and bad?
  • What are the different ways it can be used – including the new devices, including e-cigarettes – and which ones are safer?
  • What is the legal status of nicotine and its use?
  • What are the effects on others near to individuals using nicotine?
  • What policies are appropriate in relation to nicotine use – how should organisations respond?
All our our Substance Use courses are mapped to the relevant DANOS Units.
