A good foundation knowledge of substances (including alcohol) is essential when working with a range of client groups, and allows you to begin making sense of complex issues like dual diagnosis and NPS (Novel Psychoactive Substances)

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Separate the facts about drugs from popular myths and stereotypes
  • Show an increased knowledge of which substances are commonly used: names (proper and slang) groupings, how they are used, what their short- and long-term effects are
  • Determine signs and symptoms of drug use
  • Understand how the law affects the work they can do with drug users in a range of settings
  • Outline the range of specialist services and what they do
  • Access up-to-date sources of information
