More and more agencies who are not specialists are working with people with mental health problems. This is not surprising, given that one in six of the adult population has a mental health problem. This course will give attendees the knowledge and confidence to deal better with this area of their work.

The course will cover:

  • Defining the elements of good mental health and a continuum of mental health and illness
  • Defining the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
  • Understanding the mental health system, treatments offered, and the language used
  • Looking at the causes of mental health problems and how issues such as age, race and gender affect how problems are "diagnosed"
  • Looking at the legal framework, the Mental Health Act, the Care Programme Approach etc
