The Criminal Justice system can be bewildering. Structures and terminology change quickly and often. (Just keeping up with the acronyms seems like a full-time job!)
The course tries to make sense of things by following an imaginary accused person through the system, from being stopped and searched to being sentenced and beyond.
The course will cover:
- The main players in the system: Police, Crown Prosecution Service, Courts, Probation, etc. – their roles and powers
- How a case proceeds from arrest to sentencing and how staff might be involved at various stages
- Working with clients on community sentences such as ‘probation orders’, ‘tagging’, treatment orders, etc – staff roles and responsibilities
- Contributing to reports for clients and supporting them at Court appearances
- Keeping up to date with impending legislation and changes to the system
